Leaked image says iPad lands at Best Buy... on launch day

We'd heard buzzing for some time now around the internet that Apple planned to sell its iPad in more than just its own stores, and usually the name Best Buy was mentioned in the same breath... but now we've got some photographic evidence. The above shot comes from what looks to be an internal memo from the big box retailer, not only stating that the stores will be getting the iPad, but that they'll be getting the iPad on launch day. Now, there's no way for us to confirm that is 100 percent the real deal, but we speculated this could be coming back in mid-February, and there's lots of corroborating evidence to suggest this is no joke (such as COO Tim Cook explicitly mentioning the device would be sold at Best Buy) -- we just didn't expect to see it day one. We're digging for more info on this story, so stay tuned.

iPad App Store screenshots leaked

Well, look at this. If you've been desperate to know what your App Store experience would be like on the iPad, here's a chance to live the dream. Apparently these shots were discovered while the App Annie folks (an app tracking and analytics site) were "searching for clues" on the device and this "actual feed" was stumbled upon. While that's all very unclear, what isn't unclear is that Apple will be using the HD moniker to denote applications that have either been tweaked in a special iPad version, or have had their resolution upped so they wouldn't just be scaled standard apps. Additionally, we're seeing some applications that aren't even available on the iPhone right now, such as the $49.99 OmniGraffle, which we're assuming will be very close to its desktop counterpart -- a good sign that iPad apps are majorly upping the functionality. Apple to sell 99 cent TV shows at iPad launch?

Today's "people familiar with the discussions" prattle carried by both the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times has Apple reducing the price of some of its US television shows to 99 cents in time for the iPad launch. A quick search through the iTunes store makes it apparent that Apple has already been experimenting with the 99 cent rate (and a few freebies) on select iTunes episodes; shows that previously ran $1.99 for standard definition quality or $2.99 in HD. Of course, this could all change by the time the iPad launches since the talks are ongoing. Unfortunately, discussions between Apple and content providers to provide a monthly TV subscriptions have stalled according to sources at the Wall Street Journal, although Apple remains open to the idea.

It's worth remembering that prior to adding video support to its iPods, Steve Jobs regularly lambasted the idea of watching video on a tiny, handheld display. The iPad, with its big 9.7-inch 1,024 x 768 pixel IPS panel, is certainly better positioned for video consumption so it's no surprise to hear rumors that Apple's trying to jump start its video business by getting back to the magical 99 cent price point it so loves.

iPhone 3.2 Beta 2 SDK Released

Apple has announced the availability of iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 2 for developers to make sure that their apps are ready for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch when the WiFi only models of iPad are released in the last week of March. Members enrolled in the iPhone Developer Standard or Enterprise Program can access the development bits for iPhone OS 3.2 Beta 2 for iPad by signing into Apple Developer Connection.

We wont be able to list down the features new to this release as the SDK is still under the Apple’s NDA. You will have to dig for yourself for now in order to see what’s new in Beta 2 of SDK 3.2.

Video Camera Coming to iPad in Future

MacRumors is reporting on a new job posting by Apple which reveals the possibility of video-capturing capabilities in the next-generation models of Apple iPad. According to the job posting, Apple is looking for a assurance engineer in Media Systems division of their Interactive Media Group which will focus on testing frameworks for digital camera technology in iPad Media segment.

The Media Systems team is looking for a software quality engineer with a strong technical background to test still, video and audio capture and playback frameworks. Build on your QA experience and knowledge of digital camera technology (still and video) to develop and maintain testing frameworks for both capture and playback pipelines.

Apple iPad was unveiled by Steve Jobs last month in a mega event held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The lack of camera in the announced models of iPad has been seen as one of the biggest disappointments of iPad. It now seems as if Apple is holding off some features for the future versions of the iPad, just like how they did with the original iPhone, and its subsequent models the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Wouldn't it be great if you could use the iPad as a...

1. Cookbook. Okay, yeah.. this falls into e-Book category probably, but still! Having a deliciously vibrant screen illuminate the professional shot photos of scrumptious recipes has been a dream of ours for quite some time.
2. Wacom tablet replacement. If there's one thing the iPad could possibly replace, it would be the huge sketching tablets many of us have eating up room on our desks. Sure, it may not be as accurate and have a few issues interfacing with another computer, but it sure would be nice to have a wireless tablet to sketch on that doubles as a huge touch-pad.
3. Casual chat client. Well, there's one trend out there we definitely cannot ignore; the ubiquity of text messaging these days. Everyone seems to be texting more and more and in many ways, the act of receiving texts on our phones has tied us to an instant stream of immediate information right into our pockets. Personally, we find this nerve-wracking and would prefer to loosen the knot to my phone by having their messages arrive on an iPad. Plus, we imagine this is where a video camera 3rd-party accessory would kick in for anywhere-video conferencing.
4. Social board games. We've tried all played board games before. They've been playing them for centuries. But scaling them up to a reasonable resolution (and we don't mean just doubling of pixels on iPhone applications) would allow for a much more vibrant and fun experience for all users. Throw in multi-touch? Now, this could get interesting..
5. Universal Remote. This one's a no-brainer. With so much screen estate and gesture space, we imagine the iPad would blow the Logitech Harmony® 1100 Advanced Universal Remote completely out of the water as a universal controller for everything in the home. Lights. Home Theater. Action!

iPhone 4G Image Leaks

In the midst of all the iPad hype, what everyone seems to have missed was a leaked image of the next generation iPhone by Apple in one of the leaked images of iPad, which Engadget had posted just a few hours before the official announcement. As you can see from the image below, the form factor mostly remains the same as iPhone 3G/3GS except for the few finer improvements here and there. But what we can expect from Apple is some drastic changes underneath the shell with a faster processor, a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, camera on the front for video conferencing, support for WiFi-N standard and so on.

On the software side, iPhone OS 4.0 is expected to make an appearance with the next-gen iPhone with some sort of support for multitasking, video conferencing, a revamped customizable homescreen and so on. The new changes in iPhone OS 3.2 which runs on the newly announced iPad also confirms these features as a part of SDK.

WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) for the last two years has been home to new iPhone (hardware + software) announcements. Apple this year has booked a “Corporate Event” to be held at Mascone Center between Monday, June 28, 2010 to Friday July 2, 2010. This is the usual time slot when Apple holds its annual WWDC event. So chances of next-gen iPhone announcement is likely going to be made at this event.

OS X Based iPad Tablet May Release Later this Year

Some second hand sources have informed TechCrunch that Apple is already working on a OS X based tablet which is scheduled to hit the stores later this year. This tablet in question will be powered by Intel processor, unlike iPad which runs on Apple’s A4 processor.

A full version of OS X on an iPad like device will make more sense for many after all the criticism that iPad has received. We’ll have to wait for WWDC 2010 for more on development on this space as this is the event where Apple usually announces new versions of OS X (we might see a preview of OS X 10.7), the next-gen iPhone and the new iPhone 4.0 firmware.
